Hikkaduwa offers many things such as sun, surf, turtles, great beaches, restaurants and nightlife. It could be a world class destination if it did not have a busy road running through it. Buses, cars and tuk tuks barrel down the road at full speed, chucking up sand at you as they fly past.

The beach is very pleasant and lovely to stroll along with the wind blowing in your hair. Some hotels are far to close to the water, so you have to cut through them, which they do not mind at all.

Things to do

There are plenty of surf shops where you can rent a surf board and have a surf lesson. The waves are perfect for beginners.

Each restaurant has seafood for sale and some have amazing seafood BQ's.

If you like snorkeling there is a coral garden in front of the coral hotel. You can also feed huge turtles on the beach that are said to be over 100 years old. They are lured into the shored by seaweed but seem to enjoy their daily feed.

You can also visit the turtle hatchery that is just on the outskirts of town, so you will need to get a tuk tuk or bus there. The bus takes five minutes and cost 20 rupees. It costs 500 rupees to enter. It isn’t the best turtle hatchery in the world, however it breaks up a day quite nicely.

You will see lots of wildlife in Sri Lanka and Kikkaduwa is no exception, from turtles to lizards, be sure to keep your camera close, because something with always be of interest and make a great shot if you like wildlife and natural scenery.

Hikkaduwa is brilliant to start your Sri Lankian adventure from. It has no temples or grand architecture, so is very relaxing and will ease you into the Sri Lankian spirit and culture.
