SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS IN OSLOB, PHILIPPINES

I arrived around 6 am to the Whale Shark Watching Center in Oslob, just having a coffee and breakfast in a nearby cafe. We rented a scooter for a few days and used this to get to the center and were charged to park the motor cycle outside. We went through a process of firm instruction on what to do and not to do. You have to shower before going out on the boats, so there is no point in applying sun lotion if you do.

We were on a small boat with about six other people. After a few minutes we started to see the huge whale sharks and it was a surprise at we were only on the boat for about 3 minutes. We were truly exited and in ore, then jumped into the sea with the big beasts.

It was only a matter of seconds until the first one swam right up to us. They were not shy of human and come really close. They are stunning creatures and could not believe how close we were to them. It was a jaw dropping experience and were able to swim up to and with one of the worlds largest sharks. It was a magical experience.

We were given about thirty minutes to swim around them as much as we wanted as long as we didn’t touch them. And the experience cost $25.

After the experience however and analysed it. I felt bad for the sharks, as they had been coached into human feeding, for human gain. Something didn’t quite fit well with me. Am I glad I did it? yes. Would I do it again? No.
