Durmenach

Beschreibung

The small village in the south of Alsace is known for its once large Jewish community, which had grown considerably since the 18th century. Thanks to the activities of the Jewish citizens as cattle and grain merchants, the town became a trading centre. The at times strong hatred of Jews among the Christian population culminated in the 1848 pogrom, the last in French history, in which 75 Jewish houses were destroyed within five days and a large part of the Jewish population had to flee to neighbouring Basel.
